Coconut Yoghurt Serendipity
I remember what a revelation it was when I tried coconut yoghurt for the first time in 2013, while hosting a Food Tour to QLD. In fact it became quite an obsession as it was like nothing else I’d ever tasted. It wasn’t available in WA so I set about making coconut yoghurt at home. After numerous experiments, I was really pleased with the results. But, it’s not as easy to make as dairy yoghurt and it wasn’t the top of my priority list, so I haven’t made it for quite a few years now.
A couple of weeks ago Anthony was out delivering Produce Boxes and stopped at the lights next to a van branded with the name CoCoMe. He called me and asked if I’d heard of it which I hadn’t. I was curious, so I Googled the name and discovered it was in fact a WA small business making coconut yoghurt. I called Sharon the owner who greeted me on the phone like a long lost friend! She’d in fact purchased a Fisher Paykel Cool-Drawer fridge from our cooking school when we moved premises in 2017. Who would have known.
She invited me to her commercial kitchen. This was another serendipitous coincidence as her premises happen to be exactly opposite to a new gym I was going to in Booragoon!
Even before I’d tried the product, I felt the universe was providing us and our customers with a really special item we could feature from time to time in our boxes.
I tried every one of the 9 flavours (7 yoghurts and 2 custards)! Every mouthful a pure delight. The texture is velvet-smooth, flavours 100% natural built on a subtle coconut base. Sharon even makes the salted caramel sauce and fudge sauce with zero cane sugar for 2 of what I’d assert are her most popular flavours.
CoCoMe was created by Sharon Edkins for ‘every body’ to enjoy and experience the health benefits of eating this delicious, dairy free alternative, rich in probiotics to aid digestive health.
Renowned for its robust flavour and creamy consistency, every single batch is carefully crafted and pot set in Perth, Western Australia.
Just five natural plant-based ingredients are deliberately fermented for eight hours, guaranteeing CoCoMe coconut milk yoghurt is filled with ‘good’ bacteria and live cultures. It’s also a rich source of calcium, magnesium, vitamin B12 and vitamin D.
Low GI and gluten free, CoCoMe contains no preservatives and no added refined sugars, so, it can be enjoyed straight from the pot or included in recipes for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Sharon’s all about providing mindful, clean eating practices, so you too can experience the positive impact on your physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. She explains how CoCoMe was founded.
“I began experimenting in my own family kitchen making granola, nut milks and coconut yoghurt – foods rich in probiotics to support my gut health after my life took an unexpected turn.
It was 2011 and I was working as a Sonographer when a patient weighing 90kgs fell onto my arm and shoulder while having a cardiac arrest. This stretched the nerves in my upper left body which not only left my shoulder and arm permanently damaged with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), I have also been grappling with an enormous emotional and psychological load ever since.
Clean eating became a part of my everyday life as I eliminated foods that didn’t support my overall health and wellbeing. My pain seemed to increase when I ate foods filled with sugar, my brain fog was worse after eating bread. I also felt my mood swings and depression fluctuated after eating overly processed foods and my IBS symptoms would increase too.
I began researching and experimenting with foods and started to understand the gut brain connection and how different foods impacted my physical and emotional wellbeing.
My journey was clear. My new found passion became my life’s purpose – to share my knowledge and experiences with others to help them lead a healthy and happy life – and so, CoCoMe was born. I am honoured to be able to share it with you too.”
These beautiful coconut yoghurts and custards are suitable for ‘every body’, not only if you are recovering from illness or an accident.
Make these an occasional treat within a balanced diet. Kids will love the taste and texture. Pop a couple of tablespoons into a small reuseable container alongside some cut up seasonal fruit, and use as a healthy dip for an addition to school lunch boxes. Use the natural unsweetened yoghurt as an alternative to dairy to dollop on curries, make Tzatziki or Raita or add to dips and dressings.
CoCoMe range will be featured in our Produce Boxes at regular intervals throughout the year, but for more information on where to purchase at other times, take a look at the website and read CoCoMe Product Brochure for more detailed product information.
